Title: ------ Recent Progress in the Solution of the Hamiltonian Eigenvalue Problem David S. Watkins Department of Mathematics Washington State University Pullman, WA 99164-3113 Abstract --------- The Hamiltonian Eigenvalue problem arises in numerous applications, so it would be very useful to have efficient, stable eigensolvers that preserve Hamiltonian structure. This problem has turned out to be more difficult than expected and has even earned the name "Van Loan's curse". In this talk we will introduce the Hamiltonian eigenvalue problem, discuss some applications, pinpoint the difficulties, and talk about some encouraging recent progress.
